GUWAHATI: A recent study published in the journal Neurology Clinical Practice suggests that acid reflux drugs may increase the risk of migraines in people who already suffer from severe headaches. Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, highlighted this finding, which suggests that certain medications commonly used to treat acid reflux may be associated with a higher risk of migraines.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Maryland in the United States, examined the relationship between acid-reducing medications and migraines. It found that people taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and esomeprazole, as well as histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) such as cimetidine and famotidine, were at higher risk of developing migraines and other severe headaches compared to those not taking them. Medicines.

According to the study, PPIs were associated with a 70% higher risk of migraines, while H2RAs were associated with a 40% higher risk. Dr. Sudhir Kumar mentioned that these associations could be influenced by the comorbidity between gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and migraine diseases.

Dr. Kumar further explained that other studies have indicated a link between migraines and certain gastrointestinal conditions, such as Helicobacter pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, peptic ulcer disease, gastroparesis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). He mentioned that new cases of Migraine has been reported after initiation of PPI or H2RA therapy, suggesting the need for further research to establish a definitive cause-effect relationship.
