The city’s composting facility will break ground on an expansion Monday morning.

The facility is one of the largest of its kind in Canada and currently processes more than 145,500 metric tons of residential food and yard waste, and dewatered biosolids each year.

The expansion will provide an additional 60,000 tonnes per annum of capacity.

It will also include an anaerobic digestion module that will turn food and yard waste into renewable natural gas.

Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to the city.

The ceremony starts at 9:30am

More information about Calgary’s composting program is available online.
