During Saturday afternoon and evening, dozens of volunteers were out picking up litter throughout downtown Sydney.
The annual Great Cape Breton Cleanup saw more than 300 people sign up to clean up litter across the borough.
Organizers of Saturday night’s cleanup said that while spring litter is an annual problem in communities everywhere, the issue has come into sharper focus given the amount of litter buried under snowbanks during the February blizzard. .
“Meghan (Richardson) here has brought all these community members together,” cleanup organizer Mairi Musgrave said on Saturday.
“She has been outspoken and very active about this issue, because it has been a very obvious and relevant issue since the snow melted. She has been working very hard to do cleaning sessions every week, and this is one of them,” she adds.
Along with removing as much litter as they could in their communities, organizers said another reason for the early spring clean was to try to make others think twice before littering.
