Did the third umpire get another Rajasthan Royals decision wrong again? This is what the rules say.

As the tension mounts in the clash between the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League play-offs in Ahmedabad, RR Dhruv Jurel’s run has become another bone of contention which has brought the administrators under the magnifying glass .

During the second innings, the two RR batsmen, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel were involved in a big mix-up which saw the latter run out. Although it was clear that Jurel was not inside the crease, Virat Kohli had made the throw from deep but Cameron Green did not take the ball full while breaking the stumps which was a controversial topic on social media.

Former Mumbai Indians player Mitchell McClenaghan took to his official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) where he expressed his concern about the possible oversight shown once again by the third umpire.

He said, “I always thought you had to have the ball in your hand to cause a run… have the rules changed?”

However, the official IPL playing conditions document available on the official website clearly states that the batsman can be considered run out if, ”the ball bounces off the fielder’s person”

So according to the rules Cameron Green’s action would count as the ball bouncing off a fielder’s person which means he would be out in this case.

However, the concern over the umpire came after the third umpire’s error in the first innings when the umpire’s on-field dismissal of Dinesh Karthik deflected through LBW where the ball clearly hit the pads first and would have gone on to hit the stumps too.

Due to the unusual pitch, the TV umpire thought the ball had been hitting the pads which did not appear to be the case as there was a significant gap between the bat and the ball to suggest otherwise.
