Speaking to Sky News, Mr Yousaf said: “I’m looking forward to hearing back from them soon.”

Mr Yousaf was told that the Scottish Greens, his former partners in government, would not support him as First Minister – meaning that Alba’s Ash Regan could be vital to his political survival.

He said: “That would be really disappointing if that’s the Greens’ position. As I say, I have reached out to them, they say publicly that they are going to support the Conservatives’ motion against – Prime Minister, independence government.

“I think that, in my opinion, would be a bad choice to make. So of course I’ve written to Ash Regan too. I look forward to talking to her too.”

Asked how he would explain to his supporters that his government would be held by Alex Salmond’s Alba Party, he said: “I will put it out to anyone I meet, whoever comes round that table, that these are the priorities of the minority SNP Government, this is what we will follow.

“It will then be up to me – whether it’s Ash Regan, whether it’s Lorna Slater, whether it’s Patrick Harvie – or any of them to decide which button they push when it comes to a vote of no confidence.”

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Holyrood election could not be ruled out.
