Guwahati: The Guwahati High Court has directed the Registrar General to submit a status report detailing the number of pending cases, their current status and stay orders in cases related to Members of Parliament (MP) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) from the four states under its jurisdiction: Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
The order was issued by a special bench consisting of Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Arun Dev Chowdhury in a suo moto proceeding opened in accordance with the Supreme Court’s judgment dated November 9, 2023, which outlined guidelines for the speedy resolution of cases involving members of parliament and scholarship members.

"The pending cases against the Members of Parliament/MLAs in the four states – Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh – are listed in the table in para 12 of the Supreme Court order dated 9 November 2023. However, we do not find an up-to-date update. new orders," The High Court noted.
To facilitate further proceedings, the court ordered the Registrar General to submit a detailed report containing the number of cases along with the current status of the cases pending before the main bench in Guwahati and the remote benches of the High Court in Guwahati, relating to members of parliament and MLAs. as well as information on any stay orders affecting the trial or speedy disposal of these cases, including specific details.

In addition, the court ordered a similar exercise to collect information on cases pending before the district courts and special judges across Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. The High Court of Justice set May 31 as the last date for the submission of the Registrar General’s status report.
