Referring to the rehabilitation of the prisoners, the Supreme Court of the country proposed to open prisons. The court said that the overcrowding of prisoners can be controlled with the help of open prisons. In open or partially open prisons, inmates can be allowed to work outside the premises during the day, so that they can earn something for a living. Then, after the work is done, all the prisoners can return to the prison in the evening.
Hearing on the prisoners’ petition
The court gave this suggestion so that the prisoners could also connect with society and reduce their psychological stress. Hearing a petition by prisoners, a bench of Justices Bar Gwaii and Sandeep Mehta said there was a need to take note of the proliferation of open jails across the country. The bench said, ‘Such a system exists in Rajasthan and is being worked on effectively. The best way to reduce prison overcrowding is to have open prisons or open camps. This will reduce overcrowding and also solve the problem of rehabilitation of prisoners.
