The Supreme Court has directed the Maharashtra government to ensure compliance with the guidelines issued for providing compensation to the families of those missing in the 1992 Mumbai riots. Earlier, on November 4, 2022, some instructions were given in this regard but these were not followed. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujwal Bhoyan expressed displeasure over this.

Instructions issued to Maharashtra DGP and Home Department

The Supreme Court has asked the Director General of Police, Maharashtra and the State Home Department to look into the recommendations of the Justice BN Srikrishna Committee. It has also been directed to submit a compliance report in this regard before July 19. The next hearing on the Su-Moto Petition in this case will now be held on July 26.

A special chamber must be established as soon as possible – the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court said that a commission headed by Justice Sri Krishna was constituted by the state government on January 25, 1993, to inquire into the circumstances, events, causes and all aspects of the Mumbai riots. In 2022, the recommendations of the Sri Krishna Commission were accepted by the state government. In this case, the court directed the state government to provide details of inactive cases of 97 cases to the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court within a month. The court said that the government should set up a special cell as soon as possible to trace the missing accused in these cases, so that it can be take further steps in the case.

In its order, the Supreme Court also ordered the state government to submit a report to the court regarding the information about 168 missing persons in the Mumbai riots. Let us tell you that in March 2020, the Maharashtra Home Department gave an affidavit in the court. It was reported that 900 people died and 168 people Disappeared during the riots in Mumbai. Of the 168 missing, compensation was given to the families of 60 people.
