The youth of the country is in the grip of cancer. This was revealed in a report by Cancer Free India Foundation, an NGO set up by a group of oncologists. Among those who call the NGO’s helpline for cancer patients seeking a second opinion, 20 percent of cancer patients are under the age of 40. This is a clear indication that that cancer is increasing among the youth.
According to Cancer Free India Foundation, a helpline number (93-555- 20202) has been launched for patients to get a free second opinion. It is active from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 10:00 and 17:00. Cancer patients can call these helpline numbers to speak directly with top oncologists or even make video calls to discuss cancer treatment. He received calls from 1,368 cancer patients on this helpline between March 1 and May 15. According to the NGO, most of the calls were from Hyderabad. This was followed by Meerut, Mumbai and New Delhi. Among these cancer patients under the age of 40, 60 percent were men.
Head and neck cancer is the most common
The study found that most were head and neck cancers (26 percent). This is followed by gastrointestinal cancer (16 percent), breast cancer (15 percent) and then blood cancer (9 percent). The study also found that in India, 27 percent of cancer cases are detected in stages 1 and 2 and 63 percent in stage 3 or 4. The common questions cancer patients had at the helpline were about whether their treatment was correct, up-to-date, up-to-date and about their medications. At the same time, many patients used to receive information about the stage and prevention of their cancer.
