GUWAHATI: In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is fielding Sarbananda Sonowal as a prominent candidate contesting from the Dibrugarh constituency. At the age of 62, Sonowal brings a wealth of experience and skills to Assam politics.
Educationally, Sonowal holds an LLB from Gauhati University, obtained in 1996, along with a BA in Communication and Journalism from Guwahati University in the same year.

Sonowal has served in various positions over the years:
• From 2001 to 2004 he served as an MP representing Moran.
• Then, from 2004 to 2009, he represented Dibrugarh as a member of parliament.
• From 2012 to 2014, Sonwal held the post of BJP Assam President.
• In 2014 he served as Member of Parliament for Lakhimpur and held dual positions as Minister of State (independent position) of the Ministry of Entrepreneurial Skills Development and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
• In 2016, Sonowal assumed the post of Chief Minister of Assam, also representing Majuli as a member of the judiciary.
• Currently he serves as the MLA in Majuli and holds portfolios of Ministers for Ports, Shipping and Waterways as well as AYUSH.
• Additionally, since 2021, Sonowal has been a Member of Parliament for the Rajya Sabha.

Sonowal’s financial profile:
• His total income for the years 2022-23 is 15,72,580 rupees.
• He has movable assets in the amount of 1,64,65,258.85 rupees and immovable assets worth 4,33,41,635 rupees.
• It should be noted that Sonowal has declared liabilities amounting to Rs.25,78,370.
Sonovel has a clean record with no reported criminal cases against him.
