New Delhi. The Income Tax Department has sent a fresh notification of Rs 1700 crore to the Congress Party for the financial year 2017-18 to 2020-21. According to sources, the Income Tax Department’s call notice is for the year 2017-18 to 2020-21. The notice sent to the Congress includes a fine and interest in the amount of Rs 1700 crore. The notification by the Income Tax Department has further increased the Congress’s woes in the midst of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding a re-examination of the Income Tax Department’s penalty for 2017-2021, but the court rejected the Congress petition. After this a notice has been sent to the party.

Now Congress is awaiting the completion of another three-year income scrutiny. This investigation will be completed by Sunday. Congress lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha demanded a stay of the Income Tax Department’s case during the hearing in the High Court. He said the action of the Income Tax Department was unnecessary and against democracy. Meanwhile, the Congress has alleged that the main opposition party is being deliberately targeted during the Lok Sabha elections. The Income Tax Department has already recovered Rs 135 crore from the Delhi bank accounts of the Congress Party. The Income Tax Department had said in court that Rs 520 crore was not included in the assessment. Through raids in different places, the Income Tax Department has found a lot of such evidence, which clearly shows that money transactions were done through cash. Meanwhile, the Congress has said that it has received a notice from the Income Tax Department yesterday in which Rs 53.9 crore for the year 1993-94, Rs 181.99 crore for the year 2016-17, Rs 178.73 crore for the year 2017-18, Rs 178.73 crore for the year 2018-19, including Rs 490.01 crore for the year 2019-20. General notice of Rs 1823.08 crore has been received.
