Murshidabad (A.24): The High Court has shown strictness regarding the violence that took place during Ramnavami in West Bengal’s Murshidabad. The Calcutta High Court made a scathing comment on the Ramanavami violence saying that people cannot celebrate their festival peacefully for eight hours, there is no need to vote now.

The High Court has warned that people who cannot maintain peace during the festival have no right to elected representation and cancel the elections. It is worth noting that at least 19 people were injured in the clashes in Bengal’s Murshidabad district during the Ramnavami festival on April 17.

The Calcutta High Court bench of Chief Justice TS Shivaganam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya said that the Lok Sabha elections to be held in the region on May 4 and May 13 should be cancelled. “If people cannot live in peace and harmony, we will cancel the elections. The Chief Justice said, “If the people of two communities are fighting like this even though the Model Code of Conduct is in force, they do not need elections.”

In fact, the bench gave these views while hearing a Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) petition seeking an NIA or CBI probe into the violence in Beldanga and Shaktipur Murshidabad. Soon after the Ram Navami procession passed through a local mosque, violence erupted in Shaktipur district, where several people were injured.

According to news reports, as many as 33 events were organized in Kolkata on Ram Navami, but no untoward incident took place, the Chief Justice said. The court observed that both the petitioners admitted the same that no such incident had happened in those places in Murshidabad on Ramnavami in the past, were outsiders involved? He asked that.

The Chief Justice questioned government advocate Amitesh Banerjee about the events that led to the clash. Amitesh Banerjee explained that some people were walking on the road and saw two torn flags in the area. To this the judge responded that lessons are never learned. This is probably because of the election. He highlighted that Rama Navami celebrations were being held peacefully at 33 places in Kolkata.
