ED exposes Kejriwal’s high glycemic index diet plan, AAP claims political vendetta

New Delhi: Jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s dietary habits have sparked debate after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) revealed details of his high glycemic index diet during a court hearing on Thursday.

According to the allegations filed by the ED before Special Judge Rakesh Syal of the Rose Avenue Court, CM Kejriwal, who is diabetic, has been on a high-carbohydrate diet since April 2.

The CM’s diet, according to the ED, includes four eggs, two bananas and sweetened tea for breakfast along with ‘namkeen bhujiya’, a savory snack. His lunch consists of rice, potatoes, tea and fruit, including mango. Bananas, sweets and rice are part of his regular diet.

The ED counsel made these revelations during a hearing on Kejriwal’s plea seeking permission to consult his regular doctor through video conferencing due to his “fluctuating” blood sugar levels.

The ED’s claims were refuted by Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi, who accused the agency of misrepresentation.

Addressing a press conference, Atishi said that the ED had misled the court by saying that Kejriwal was consuming sweetened tea, sweets and bananas.

“Diabetes patients are advised to always keep chocolates, toffee or bananas with them for any emergency,” Atishi said.

She also alleged that Kejriwal’s sugar level had risen significantly as Tihar Jail authorities failed to provide him with insulin despite repeated requests.

“He uses artificial sweetener. By trying to stop the supply of home food to CM Kejriwal, the BJP is trying to harm his health through ED. The diet chart submitted by the ED shows that Kejriwal was fertile only once and that too on the first day of Navratri. Won’t you allow him to have Navratri’s prasad,” she requested.

“His sugar level has increased by more than 300 in the last few days. Kejriwal has repeatedly asked for his insulin. But the jail authorities are not even providing him insulin,” she claimed.

Taking a dig at the AAP, Delhi BJP president Virender Sachdeva said Arvind Kejriwal’s dual character has come to light amid the bail release.

“While AAP leaders call themselves followers of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman, Arvind Kejriwal consumed eggs during Navratri while in jail,” he alleged.

According to the diet chart submitted by ED to the court, Kejriwal consumed eggs on April 11. Navratri started on 9th April and ended on 17th April.

Responding to the BJP’s allegations, Atishi defended her chief minister, saying the eggs were part of a balanced diet advised by doctors.

Earlier on Thursday, the legal counsel presented various documents in the court, including a letter from the senior medical officer of Tihar Jail seeking nutritional counseling for Kejriwal, to support the agency’s claims.

The ED said Kejriwal’s diet led to an increase in his sugar level, which stood at 116 on the morning of April 4, before rising to 280 on April 12 and 276 on April 14.

“It can be observed that Kejriwal consciously consumes items like tea with sugar, bananas, sweets (half pieces), puri, aaloo sabji etc., on a regular basis, despite being a type 2 diabetic, knowing full well that consumption of such items will raise the levels His sugar,” the ED told the court.

The agency also stated that this was done to create a medical emergency “in order to receive sympathetic treatment from the court on medical grounds.”

“Furthermore, the jail authorities on Wednesday asked AIMS to prescribe a nutritional chart for the chief minister after considering his sugar records and the fact that he is a type 2 diabetic with chronic constipation and cough (chronic bronchitis), who is under regular treatment,” the legal adviser said.

After a brief hearing, the court sought a medical report from Tihar Jail authorities on the CM’s diet and listed the matter for hearing on Friday.

Kejriwal, who was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the alleged excise policy scam, is lodged in Jail No. 2. He is in judicial custody till April 23.
