The owner of three Calgary dogs that got loose and fatally mauled a woman in 2022 will be sentenced Monday.

In February, Dennis Bagaric agreed to have one of his pets euthanized and pleaded guilty to two of 12 bylaw charges.

The charges included one count of allowing an animal to attack a person and cause serious injury, and one count of allowing animals to run at large.

On June 5, 2022, Bagaric’s Staffordshire American dogs – Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki – were in the back yard of his property on 21 Avenue NW, when the dogs broke free from the fenced back yard into the lane where Williams was gardening.

Williams suffered serious injuries and later died in hospital.

Before this incident, court documents say there were no signs of past aggression, trauma or abuse by Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki.

However, all three dogs were surrendered to the City of Calgary and Smoki was euthanized because it is believed that the dog caused the serious injuries that led to Williams’ death.

Bossii and Cinnamon remain in bylaw custody until a Dangerous Dogs Act hearing can be completed.

That hearing was due to start on March 27, but was postponed after Justice FA Day recused himself from the case.

City lawyers say Day declared a mistrial in the case, which was supposed to decide the fate of two of the three dogs involved in the attack, after revealing he “reviewed material on the court file that was not evidence before the court at the hearing.”

Sentencing for Bagaric begins at 9 am

The Crown prosecutor representing the City of Calgary is seeking a fine of up to $15,000 and a ban against Bagaric from owning animals for 10 to 15 years.
