However, the ministry and CBSE are planning a consultation with school principals in the coming month to discuss methods for conducting board exams twice a year.

The proposal to hold two sets of board exams at the end of the academic year raised several logistical challenges.

CBSE officials are now looking at how to structure the academic calendar to accommodate another set of board exams without affecting the undergraduate admission schedule.

The new National Curriculum Framework (NCF), prepared by the centrally appointed National Steering Committee headed by former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan, has proposed to give students an option to write board exams twice a year.

While this proposal has been welcomed as a way to reduce pressure on students and offer more flexibility, the Ministry of Education has clarified that appearing for board exams twice a year will not be mandatory, but optional, allowing students to choose their best score.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had previously indicated that the approach would be similar to the engineering entrance exam, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), where students are given multiple chances to achieve their best score.

The proposed changes mark a significant departure from previous attempts to reform the board’s exams.

The idea of holding board exams in two terms was also implemented as a one-time measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the year-end format was revived in 2023.
