A heartbreaking video has emerged from Brazil where a horse tried to survive by standing on the roof of a house in Rio Grande do Sul amid the deadly floods in the country that claimed at least 100 lives.
The video was shot by the Globo TV used a helicopter on Wednesday as the agency measured the destruction in the flooded areas.
The Department of Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul said they are launching a mission to rescue the stranded horse.
The horse was apparently left behind by its handlers who fled to save their lives from deadly floods, where hundreds of injuries have also been reported.
The severe weather also hampered the rescue efforts of the Brazilian authorities as over 163,000 people were forced to take shelter and save their lives.
The devastation was triggered last week when torrential rains started which devastated infrastructure and road connectivity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul – which borders Uruguay and Argentina.
Adriana Freitas said in the state capital Porto Alegre, where the Guaiba River burst its banks and flooded the streets of the city: “We have lost everything. It is sad when we see the city, our house, in in the middle of the water. It seems as if it’s over, that the world has ended.”
As many as 128 people are also located by the rescue officers encouraging people close to the Patos lagoon to leave their homes.
Reuters also that a local volunteer found around 20 dogs stuck on the second floor of an abandoned factory, and offered food.
Weather forecaster MetSul said in a statement that the region could face more “very large” flooding “of serious proportions”.
