Another driver says his car was hit by falling concrete while driving on the island of Montreal.

A Pointe-Claire resident says his car was hit by concrete that fell from an overpass on Route 20. The Fenlon Bridge in Durval appears to be in good shape, but on closer inspection it’s clear debris fell.

Monday afternoon, while Greg Desmarais and his son were driving west under the bridge when there was a loud bang on the roof of his car.

“Out of the slit of my eye I saw an object in the air behind the car. So I thought it was a piece of concrete that had fallen from the overpass,” he told CTV News.

Desmarais says he was lucky — the falling concrete bounced off his roof rack and left a large dent, but the actual car was undamaged.

“I think it could have gone differently if it had gone through the windshield. I don’t know [what] The result was, it was on one of our knees, I guess, and the results of that could be disastrous,” he said.

Earlier this month, a West Island couple also had a piece of debris land on their car while driving on Route 40. They told CTV News at the time that they believed the piece fell from the Route 13 overpass.

They were not injured, but their car was heavily damaged.

“We just saw this huge piece of concrete in the shape of a meteor flying towards us. And it went right into our windshield,” Dan Chulva said at the time.

In this case, the Ministry of Transportation inspected the overpass of Highway 13 and found no problems with the structure and concluded that the debris likely fell from a truck that hit the pothole.

When asked about problems at the Fenlon Bridge, a Department of Transportation spokesman said inspectors were conducting an investigation. But for Desmarais, the state of infrastructure across the city is a real concern.

“I think our government is working a bit defensively instead of proactively, and that’s what’s worrying,” he said.
