27 Get life imprisonment in 2018 Dalit triple murder case in Tamil Nadu

Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu: The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention Act) Special Court on Friday sentenced 27 people to life imprisonment in the 2018 massacre of three Dalits in Kachanantham village of Sivagangai district in Tamil Nadu.
The special court convicted all 27 accused on August 1 and announced the quantum of sentences on Friday. Accordingly, Judge Muthukumaran sentenced all the accused to life imprisonment.
Arumugam (65), Shanmuganathan (31) and Chandrasekhar (34) belonging to the lower caste of Kachanandam village near Tiruppachetty in Sivagangai district were brutally murdered on the night of 28 May 2018.
They were hacked to death by members of the dominant community in a dispute over payment of fines at a temple festival. 5 more dalit people were injured in this attack. Among the injured, Thanasekaran (32) died a year and a half after the incident.
In this case, the police filed a charge sheet against 33 people including Suman, Arunkumar, Chandrakumar, Agniraj and Rajesh from Avarangadu village. Four of the accused were minors, two of whom died during the trial and one absconded.
Following the court order, heavy police security was deployed in the court premises as a precautionACHI measure to prevent any untoward incident.
