The incident that led to the case involved a video posted by Suriya on his X (formerly Twitter) where he allegedly appealed to voters by invoking religious sentiments. This act, according to the complaint, violates election norms that prohibit soliciting votes on the basis of religion, class, community or language.

Suriya, a prominent BJP leader and the national president of its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, is pitted against Congress candidate Soumya Reddy, who narrowly lost the 2023 Jayanagar assembly elections by just 16 votes.
