The Supreme Court dismissed all petitions seeking 100 percent verification of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes through Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips. Along with this, the court also rejected the petitions for voting by ballot.
While rendering the verdict, the court gave two major instructions
The Supreme Court gave two directions – the first is that after the symbol loading process is over, the symbol loading units (SLUs) must be sealed and stored for at least 45 days. Apart from this, the second instruction is that the candidates will have an option to get the EVMs microcontroller program for checking by engineering team after the declaration of results. For this, the candidate must apply within seven days of the declaration of results. The candidate will have to bear his own expenses.
Earlier, after two consecutive days of discussion, the committee reserved its decision on the petitions on April 18. However, on Wednesday the Supreme Court listed the issue again. Then the Supreme Court asked for clarification from the Election Commission about several things. The court then reserved its decision. While qualifying the verdict, the Supreme Court commented that it cannot control the elections, nor act as a control authority of a constitutional body. There are provisions in the law that allow the perpetrator to face the consequences. The court cannot grant mandamus merely on the basis of suspicion.
