New Delhi (August 26): The Supreme Court today on Friday disposed of a petition seeking reconciliation of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips with votes cast through EVMs ie Electronic Voting Machines.

The Election Commission has received a major relief from the Supreme Court regarding the VVPAT controversy. Amid the ongoing second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, the Supreme Court has rejected a plea seeking reconciliation of 100 percent of the votes cast through EVMs with VVPAT slips. We have dismissed all the petitions,” said Justice Sanjeev Khanna.

In fact, several organizations had filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking 100 percent matching of EVM and VVPAT slips. During the earlier hearing, a bench headed by Justice Sanjeev Khanna had reserved its verdict in the Supreme Court. Justice Dipankar Dutta was also present on this bench. The court on Wednesday summoned an Election Commission of India official to explain some technical aspects related to the functioning of EVMs.

Last week, the bench reserved its decision on several public interest litigations (PILs) on the issue. Generally, official acts are considered authentic under the Indian Evidence Act and everything done by the Election Commission cannot be questioned, he said.
