Ottawa (May 04): Canadian police have released pictures of the three suspects arrested in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police identified the three accused as Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh and Karan Brar.

Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar have been charged with murder and conspiracy to murder, a Global News report identified the suspects as Indian nationals. “Canadian police arrested the Indian nationals on Friday morning almost a year after Nijjar was shot dead,” the report said, citing sources that the suspects had entered Canada on student visas and were acting on instructions from India’s intelligence agency.

According to sources, the three have been arrested and charged with acting as shooters, drivers etc. on the day Nijjar was killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.

Police arrested the men on Friday in a search operation in at least two Canadian provinces, according to news reports. Sources said that the police had identified this group of people who were involved in Nijjar’s killing a few months ago and that the police had been keeping an eye on them.

In September last year, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, had claimed that Indian agents were ‘probably’ involved in the killing of Nijjar, following which relations between India and Canada soured. India had dismissed Trudeau’s claims as ‘absurd’ and ‘provocative’.

Days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made some comments on Khalistani elements in his country, India said on Thursday that these comments again reflect the political space given to separatism, extremism and violence in Canada. Trudeau was addressing an event organized on Khalsa Day in Toronto on Sunday, which was attended by some pro-Khalistan people. Referring to the activities of pro-Khalistan elements, Trudeau told the media on the sidelines of the event that ‘it is not our job to stop political opposition.’

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly press conference, ‘Prime Minister Trudeau has made similar statements in the past. His comments once again reflect the political space given to separatism, extremism and violence in Canada, when he was asked about Trudeau’s comments, ‘It will not only affect the relationship between India and Canada. It promotes a climate of violence in Canada.’
