NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath’s bullish model has proved too costly for the BJP government in Assam. Due to the operation of bulldozers, the BJP government led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has to pay lakhs of rupees.

The Assam government has given compensation of Rs 30 lakh to five families whose houses were destroyed by bulldozers two years ago. These families were accused of burning down the police station. Two years ago, authorities had killed an accused housekeeper who allegedly set fire to a police station in Nagaon district. But now the state government has given compensation to those who have lost their homes as per the court order. The Assam government has given this information to the Guwahati High Court.

As per India Express news, the Himanta Biswa Sharma government in Assam has approved a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the family of Safikul Islam. Safiqul Islam died while in police custody. After this incident, locals set Batadrava Police Station on fire. Later, on the orders of CM Himanta Biswa Sharma, the officers had killed the house of the accused who had set fire to the police station. Now the Assam government lawyer has informed the Guwahati High Court on Wednesday.

Senior government advocate D Nath told a division bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Suman Shyam that the family of Safikul Islam has not been able to submit the succession certificate yet. He said the authorities will release the compensation amount as soon as the affidavit is submitted. Senior government advocate D Nath told the High Court that the Nagaon Superintendent of Police had given compensation to the other five families on Monday.

Why was the compensation given, what happened?

On May 21, 2022, Safiqul Islam, a fishmonger, died while in police custody. After this, a group set fire to the Batadrava Police Station in Salonabari village of Nagon district, alleging that the police had beaten Safikul to death. Assam government’s bulldozing action was taken the day after this incident. The authorities demolished the houses of five families involved in the arson incident. The police considered these houses illegal and bulldozer action was taken.

The Guwahati High Court had received an unsolicited complaint last year in connection with a housing bulldozing case. A bench headed by the then Chief Justice RM Chhaya had said that this act was illegal. The bench said it hoped the state government would provide compensation to the victims of the illegal act. The High Court had earlier reprimanded the then Superintendent of Police. The court said that the police cannot drive a bulldozer on someone’s house without permission on the pretext of the investigation.

What action was taken against the guilty officers?

In this case, on April 24 this year, the IGP ie the Inspector General of Police (Administration) had sent a compensation proposal to the Joint Secretary, Home and Political Department of the state government. According to this proposal, Rs 10 lakh for each pukka house and Rs 2.5 lakh for each demolished mud house. Recommended. The houses that were compensated by the Assam government on Monday included two pakka houses and four mud houses.
