Soumyajyoti Mandal, Chanchal: The North Malda Lok Sabha constituency of Chanchal was once an impregnable stronghold of the Congress. Even in the Left era, even after the change in the state, until 2016, the driving force of Chanchal politics was in the hands of the Congress. But the political equation started to change from the 18th Panchayat polls. For the first time in the 19th election, grass was blooming. BJP emerged as the second political force. But despite the change in politics, the situation in different areas of Chanchal has not changed much.

Chanchal is the only one in the state where the municipality has not started even after two announcements. Although Trinamool won the election by showing that dream, it completely failed to fulfill the promise. Meanwhile, the population is increasing day by day in Chanchal, the headquarters of the division. There are several important administrative offices, courts, colleges, superspeciality hospitals. However, due to a lack of proper planning, the development has stalled due to lack of a municipality. Chanchal is full of multiple problems starting from drainage, roads, street lights, bus stands, traffic system. Residents say this year’s election will have a big impact.

Deepak Chattopadhyay, a resident of Chanchal said, “The current ruling party of the state has power from the Panchayat to the Legislative Assembly but it has failed to show the direction of Chanchal’s development.”

Recently there has been widespread corruption at the panchayat level in this assembly area. Genuine beneficiaries deprived of the benefits of various government schemes. Katmani has become an obstacle. Political circles feel that this can also have a big impact on EVMs.

Shovit Das, a young man from Chanchal, said, ‘Even though he is studying, there is no work in the area. If you are sick, there is no good treatment. In some places we got nothing but water supply and roads.’ Muhammad Hossain, a farmer by profession, said, ‘There is pollution even in the work done. The ruler has changed. But the problem has not been solved.’

However, according to the local leadership on the ground, a number of steps have been taken regarding development in the area. The government is trying to develop more.
