Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the Center has released Rs 3454 crore to provide drought relief to the state. Whereas Karnataka demanded Rs 18171 crore from the central government to compensate the loss. However, after the Supreme Court’s warning, the Center approved Rs 3499 crore. The CM urged the central government to release the remaining relief amount soon. At the same time, he also confessed to the Supreme Court.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference on Saturday, where he said that the state government has declared 223 taluks as drought-affected on September 13, 2023. 48 lakh hectares of crops have been affected. This caused a loss of Rs 35162 crore. Karnataka has asked the central government for compensation of Rs 18171 crore, which is almost half of the loss.
Karnataka reached the Supreme Court
According to him, even after he requested compensation from the center, when he did not receive it, the state government appealed to the Supreme Court. Karnataka informed the Supreme Court about the entire drought situation. During the hearing of the petition, the Supreme Court was convinced that the Center was doing injustice to Karnataka for political reasons. At the same time, the central government has assured the Supreme Court that the compensation amount will be released to Karnataka within a week.
