Report yourself: Assam comes to mind when we say Bihu. Bihu singing and dancing is an important part of Assamese culture. Bihu has also influenced many Bengali songs and dances. In keeping with the times, Bihu celebration has also acquired an ‘uncomfortable’ tinge of modernity. But the ‘Gachthaler Bihu’ of Assam has not changed even today.

‘Gachthaler Bihu’ is organized only in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. This particular Bihu dance is a very unique custom of the Matak tribe of Assam. Matak tribe women start singing Bihu under the tree from the first day of Bohag. They still celebrate Bihu under trees in pairs for 13, 15 or 17 days. For 13, 15 or 17 days from the first Bohag, the women celebrate Bihu with traditional dances and songs under a bamboo bush or a large mango tree in an open field some distance from the village settlement. This is called understory bihu. Bihu is celebrated by climbing a tall tree with dancing and singing. There are people with a heart.

The vagaries of modernity have not yet taken hold of the tree-lined Bihu. It is seasonal. On Bihu day the women wait on the tree, and the young men stand under the tree. On the last day, the girls sing and dance to say goodbye to Bihu. They cut their money, jewellery, jeng khari etc and threw it into the bihu tree and walked straight home without looking back. Later the villagers make offerings of coconut and betel with drums and taals and end the Bihu by singing Huchari Padas.
