The City of Calgary’s hearing on proposed general rezoning is set to continue into its third week.

There is debate over whether to transfer properties zoned as R-C1 areas, which currently only allow single-family homes, to R-CG to open the door for more housing density in Calgary communities.

The public hearing is the largest in the city’s history, with 992 speakers registered at last count, as of Friday night. The hearings began on April 22.

The city has arranged overflow slots for any other residents who wish to share their views on the plan, for Monday, Thursday and Friday.

The overflow time slots are as follows:

  • Monday, May 6: 11:30 am – 9:30 pm
  • Thursday, May 9: 9:30 am – 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm
  • Friday, May 10:9:30am – 6:00pm

The schedule can be adjusted as needed.

Anyone wishing to speak to the council is encouraged to register, either online or in person at the registration desk in the Town Building Atrium.

When the public hearing is over, the council will discuss the changes and propose amendments before voting.

The city says 67 percent of residential properties are currently zoned for single-family homes only.

General rezoning to R-CG still allows single-family homes on those properties but also allows for semi-detached homes, such as townhouses and terraced homes.
