East Street, Southampton

The Horse & Groom pub on East Street, an area that has changed many times in the years since.

This well-known sailors’ pub was a favorite among sailors from the early 1980s until its demolition in the early 1970s.

A popular attraction was a large stuffed brown bear in one of the bars.

Toton

Shops at the time included Goldsmiths newsagents, Colts radio and television engineers, Abbey Music Center and Hunters drug store.

Ballymont barracks

The Tel Aviv Center on Millbrook Road looks almost the same these days as it did when this photo was taken.

A housing estate under construction off Copperham Lane, Rumsey

Nursing industrial estate

Nursling grew as an industry during that time.

The drinking fountain in Shirley was located on Rumsey Street in its present home in the Shirley district.

Handley is now Mary’s Hairdresser, R&E Gilbert Confectioners has become Teddy Baby Hairdressers and Cozens Fish and Chip Shop was recently a tasty takeaway.

Not much has changed since these photos of the city’s train station were taken.

The Swithling market buildings look much as they do today, although most of the shops have changed hands.
