The new wage rates under Section 6 (1) of MNREGA 2005 will come into effect from 1 April, 2024.

The wages given to laborers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) have increased. The government has increased wages by 4 to 10% in many states. The new pay rates will come into effect from April 1.

According to the notification, the maximum salary has been increased by Rs 34 in Goa. Wages have increased least by Rs 7 in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The highest salary is Rs 374 in Haryana and the lowest salary is Rs 234 in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Here, Rahul Gandhi, while taking a dig at the government regarding the increase in MNREGA wages, has written on X – Congratulations to MNREGA workers. PM has increased the salary by Rs 7. Now they may ask – what will you do with such a huge amount of money?

Rahul said – Government of India will increase the wages to Rs 400 on the first day itself.

Regarding the minor change in pay rates, Rahul wrote on social media congratulating MNREGA workers. The Prime Minister has increased your salary by Rs 7. Now he may ask you – what will you do with such a huge amount of money? And by spending Rs 700 crore, they should also start a ‘Thank Modi’ campaign in your name. Those who are angry with this massive generosity of Modi ji, remember – the Government of India is going to increase the wages of all laborers to ₹ 400 per day on the first day.

What changes will occur due to increase in MNREGA funds?
Eight states, Haryana, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Kerala and Lakshadweep, have seen growth below 5%. Overall, the pay rise for the 2024-25 financial year is between 4%-10%. The notification shows that wages have increased by around 10% in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka and Telangana.

Release new rates after being approved by the Electoral Commission
The change in wage rates under MNREGA was notified by the Union Ministry of Rural Development on March 27 after being approved by the Election Commission. Because the Model Code of Conduct is in force for the Lok Sabha elections starting from April 19. The Ministry had sought permission from the Election Commission, after which the Commission granted permission.

What is the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme?
MNREGA was started in the year 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development. This is a scheme that guarantees employment. Under this, the government employs people in rural areas at minimum wage. This includes work such as digging pits, ponds and making drains. Under MNREGA, employment guarantee is given for 100 days.
