Meghan Markle is expected to skip the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games in May.
The ceremony, which is due to take place in London, has left the Duchess of Sussex torn over her decision to attend.
Royal expert Jonathan Sacredoti tells BBC World’s Dateline London: “I can’t say whether she will come back in May.
“So far she has avoided his country, perhaps sensibly.
“I don’t think she will get the warmest welcome here if she does.”
Speaking about Meghan’s rift with the royal family, Sacerdoti added: “I think rifts happen in a lot of families. But I think it’s unusual for estranged family members to pursue a strategy of make money from gossiping about the rest of their family.
He then pointed out: “That’s because most people don’t have any currency in that direction. I don’t think people will be too interested to hear gossip from ordinary families.
