It is now clear that the SNP have pulled out of the agreement, blindside the leaders of the Scottish Green Party – who were also due to face a vote by their own members on the future of the agreement.

The deal was under threat after the Scottish Government scrapped its climate change target for 2030, and also banned the use of puberty blockers for children.

Confirming that the end of the cooperation agreement has come to an end, Ms Slater – who held the position of Minister for Green Skills, the Circular Economy and Biodiversity until this morning – paid off her former colleagues in the cabinet.

He said: “This is an act of political cowardice by the SNP, who are selling out to future generations in order to appease the most reactionary forces in the country.

“Voters deserve better, Scotland deserves better. Scottish Green voters certainly deserve better.

“They have broken the bonds of trust with members of both parties who have chosen the climate action and cooperation agreement twice over chaos, culture wars and division. They have betrayed the electorate.

“And by ending the agreement in such a weak and completely hopeless way, Humza Yousaf has indicated that in terms of political cooperation, he can no longer be trusted.”

The attack on the First Minister comes after he was the only SNP leadership candidate to support the Bute House Agreement with the Scottish Greens during his campaign.

He gave his support to the deal earlier this week, but has now performed a spectacular U-turn.

Ms Slater said the decision to scrap the deal betrayed her party membership.

He said: “In just a few weeks our members were to have a democratic vote on approving the cooperation agreement.

“We are confident that they would have supported us to continue our work for Scotland, as they have done every time.

“Neither they nor the members of the SNP will have that opportunity. Instead, the most reactionary and backward forces within the Prime Minister’s party have forced him to do the opposite of what he himself had ‘to say it was for the best interests of Scotland.’
