The Herald understands that the aircraft involved was a Piper Cherokee Archer II, owned by Scottish Airways Flyers (SAF), a group of around 25 pilots.

It is understood that the tower lost contact with the aircraft at around 16.00, with the accident being reported to the emergency services around 10 minutes later.

It is believed that the plane has been trying to “touch and go” where it lands on the runway before taking off again.

This is usually practiced during flight training but is sometimes used as a type of aborted landing after touchdown.

The incident happened near Kilmaen, with the A719 closed on the B739 closed and the public urged to avoid the area.

The Herald:

The condition of the two people on the plane is currently unknown, but it is believed that they were both taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “At around 4.10pm on Tuesday, 23 April, 24 we received a report that a small plane with two people on board had crashed in Kilmaen.

“Police and Ambulance are in attendance.”

The club’s website describes the plane as “truly a 4 person flight and has been as far away as Bergen in Norway, Texel in the Netherlands and more recently Majorca”.

SAF membership can be purchased for £4000 – £4500 per year, with a current flying rate of £135 per hour and an annual fee of £750 to cover fixed costs such as insurance and maintenance.
