NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has stayed an order on petitions seeking 100 per cent verification of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes through their Voter Verification Paper Audit (VVPA) route. A bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta decided to issue directions on the petition. The Supreme Court has clearly said that we will not control the elections. The Supreme Court is not an election management authority. The Supreme Court said it cannot direct the functioning of the Election Commission of India, a constitutional authority. The court has reserved its judgment for now.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had sought some clarification from the Election Commission of India. The Supreme Court has received petitions seeking full cross-verification of the votes cast using EVMs through the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT).

Explain the Electoral Commission

Answering the Supreme Court’s question on micro-controllers, the Deputy Election Commissioner said that micro-controllers are one-time programmable. Each of the three units – CU (Control Unit), BU (Voting Unit) and VVPAT – has its own micro-managers. It is not physically accessible.

What is VVPAT? How does it work?

VVPAT – Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail : VVPAT helps voters verify that their votes have been cast correctly, detecting electoral fraud or potential malpractice. It is also an independent verification system for voting machines designed to examine the electronic results collected The machine contains the name of the candidate (voted for) and the symbol of the party/individual candidate.
