The first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was held on April 19 in several states. In all, 102 Lok Sabha seats in 21 states and union territories went to polls. Accordingly, dry days were declared wherever there was a polling station and even in the neighboring districts. The Kamrup (Metro) administration has declared dry days in the district from April 17 to April 19 for the first phase of the Meghalaya general elections on April 19. The ban was in effect from 16:00 on April 17 until the end of the elections on April 19. Wholesale warehouses, bonded warehouses, IMFL retail ON and OFF stores, micro breweries and liquor stores remain closed during this period. The move was to maintain peace and order during the election process.

Well, the polls were mostly peaceful, but didn’t anyone drink 48 hours before or during the polls? In every constituency, especially in the North East, voters are wooed with liquor and meat. Forty-eight hours before the elections, the platform workers of various parties invite voters to the parties and offer liquor and other goodies. This is not done openly, but it is a known truth. Before the start of the dry day, party members purchase liquor.

Despite the closing of the liquor stores and losses, there can be no mechanism where people who buy the drinks should be responsible before the purchase regarding the use. There should be a limit on purchase by individuals, only a certain amount can be purchased by one person. But one thing is for sure, dry surveys are just a gimmick.
