Some talented Calgarians are bringing a traditional story with a technological twist to life on stage this week.
Cast and crew at Calgary Opera are preparing for their new production of the Rheingold.
Written by Richard Wagner in 1854, it is a holdover from a production originally staged by Minnesota Opera in 2016.
“It’s a legendary adventure, characters fighting for gold and giving up love,” said Opera Calgary CEO Sue Elliott. “So it’s a story that’s common to Marvel movies, i Star Warsi Lord of the Rings.”
The Calgary Opera costume crew is busy tweaking some of the original costumes.
The costumes include gold colored sleeves that light up and also an eye piece with attached lights.

The lights are controlled by the performer who wears those pieces when portraying the character Wotan.
“Wotan is the king of the gods,” says Calgary Opera Head of Wardrobe Heather Moore.
Moore and his team enjoy working on the elaborate costumes.
“It’s very exciting,” Moore said. “We are very happy with the way this is looking.”

Moore’s team members ensure that the technical aspects of the costumes work as they should.
“The last thing you want is for these technical elements to distract the singers,” says Moore. “Because they are like athletes – they have to focus on their performance.”
“It has a lot of special effects, great video projections,” Elliott said. “And other tricks we have up our sleeve.”
Calgary Opera production of the Rheingold runs April 20, 24 and 26 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
