Maritime lover David Bickle, a resident of Greenways Court HC-One care home in Consett, County Durham, voiced his desire to experience life at sea once again.
In response, his dedicated colleagues went a step further, arranging a visit for him to the Port of Tyne.
At the age of 86, David, who has called Greenways Court his home since August 2022, maintains a deep love for ships and the maritime world, a passion cultivated over many years working as an engineer. His extensive knowledge and fascinating stories are of endless interest to the care home staff.
Tracy Graham, the Wellbeing Co-ordinator, was discussing upcoming activities in the home with David, which he often loves to take part in, when he said:
“The only thing I’d like to do is get on a ship again.”
After a few calls and a face to face meeting with the Royal Quays, Port of Tyne, David’s dream day out was planned!
On 28 February 2024, accompanied by his colleagues, David arrived at the Royal Quays, located in the Port of Tyne, which provides activities such as sailing, motor boats and sea fishing.
The tour of the harbor was a wonderful experience for David and he was shown all the harbor works, he had many questions about the boats, how much water is available and how they are dry docked.
At the end of the tour, David was delighted when he was asked if he would like to open the 150 year old gates on the dock. David climbed two flights of stairs and was at the top in no time!
David returned home with a huge smile on his face. He exclaimed:
“Thank you very much I had an amazing day, and it’s not even my birthday.”
Michelle Bull, Care Manager at Greenways Court said:
“When David returned, he had the biggest smile and told me the day was better than his birthday. Seeing the effect this had on David makes it all worth it.
“We always strive to improve the lives of our residents and ensure that all their wishes are fulfilled, I am proud of the team for making this happen.”
