"I’m in Dibrogra today. I met Amritpal Singh. He confirmed to me that he will contest the elections from Mehdhur Sahib," Khalsa confirmed.
Sources indicate that a mainstream political party is considering providing support to Amritpal Singh’s candidacy from the sidelines.

Fugitive preacher Amritpal Singh, whom the government describes as a Khalistani-Pakistani agent, faced several charges along with his associates. Several criminal cases are registered against him related to spreading disharmony between classes, attempted murder, assaulting police officers and creating obstacles in the lawful performance of their duties by public servants.

On the early morning of Sunday, April 23, Amritpal was arrested from Rood village in Moga, and then brought to Air Force Station Bathinda by the Punjab Police, before being transferred to Dibrugarh Central Jail. According to reports, the reason for transferring Amritpal and his aides to Assam instead of being taken to jails in Punjab or Delhi could be the presence of other gangsters known to the separatist group.

According to Indian laws, a prisoner cannot vote but can run in elections until convicted.
