A Calgary company is facing a $330,000 fine in connection with a workplace death from two years ago.
The death occurred on a work site in Calgary in March 2022.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) said in a news release Thursday that the worker was operating an overhead crane to install a pump cover when the cover dislodged from the rigging, killing him.
Calgary-headquartered Westpower Equipment Ltd. pleaded guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act – failing to ensure the health and safety of an employee – on April 22.
The Crown withdrew a further 22 charges under OHS legislation.
Westpower Equipment was fined $275,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $55,000.
The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal against a conviction or penalty.
