Kolkata: As expected, the BJP has roped in former Trinamool Member of Parliament Tapas Roy from Kolkata North. While it was somewhat certain that Tapas would be nominated for the North Kolkata Centre, there was some confusion as to who would get the BJP ticket for the South Kolkata Centre. In the end, Gerua Shibir sprung a surprise by nominating Debashree Chowdhury, the outgoing MP from Raiganj, in that constituency.
Due to clash with Trinamool MP Sudip Banerjee, Tapas Roy finally left Trinamool. Since then he was somehow assured of getting BJP ticket in Kolkata North constituency. Since Tapas Roy is a candidate for that centre, this time Bengal politics will witness a fight for the honor of two leaders in North Kolkata. The Congress has nominated senior leader Pradeep Bhattacharya in that centre.
Debahree Chowdhury did not get ticket from Raiganj due to party fight. There were also doubts whether the former Union Minister would get a ticket at all this time. It is good to say that the party pushed Debashree in the end to face a tough challenge in Trinamool like South Kolkata. The Trinamool candidate in that center is Mala Roy. He is the current MP of South Kolkata. Saira Shah Halim is the CPM candidate in Kolkata South.

BJP has announced candidates for 19 more constituencies in Bengal today in the second phase. Apart from Tapas Roy, BJP has also hired Arjun Singh who recently left Trinamool and returned to BJP from Barrackpore.
