Found while restoration is in progress!

The idols of Panchaloha were discovered while the temple was being renovated. During the excavation of the foundation of the temple, the head of the first idol was discovered. Later, when the soil was carefully removed, a two and a half feet high conch shell and an idol of Vishnu were found.

The Temple priests confirmed that the other two idols found after Vishnu belonged to Sridevi and Bhudevi Devi. These are estimated to be worth billions of rupees. The temple management said that they will seek the help of archeology department officials to find out the age of the idols.

Muslim attacks were feared!

The 13th century saw the rise of the Delhi Sultanate. Since the reign of the Khilji dynasty, they made frequent raids into South India. The later Tughluq dynasty continued the raids. In the 1790s, the Rayalaseema region where Kurmai village was located was under the rule of Muhammadans (Muslim rulers). Due to religious differences among the people during this period, most of the important temples were demolished.

A temple buried under the soil!

There are records that the villagers of Kurmai at the time hid the temple of Swamy Kurma Varadaraja, covered it with mud, and protected it from being defiled by the hordes of Muhammadan kings. The temple turned into a huge mound of mud. Varadaraja Swamy Temple has disappeared from the earth. It is believed that Lord Varadaraja Swami of the temple gave the temple to Kancheepuram when the temple was flooded under mud.
