Although he is likely to be eliminated in 2027, the American businessman may return to the position in 2032 once the next five-year cycle ends.

Chelsea Chairman Todd Boehly is likely to be ousted from his position at the club in 2027 by his co-owners. Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the London football club in 2022 from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Now, two years on from the acquisition, a new report has emerged on TalkSPORT which suggests that majority owners Clearlake are planning to change to a new leader at the club by the end of the 2026/27 season.

During the agreement in 2022, both parties had agreed on a clause that would see the chairmanship pass between them every five years. Given that, Chelsea are looking to activate the clause as soon as possible in 2027.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea together in the midst of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Due to political tensions due to his Russian nationality, the club’s former owner, Roman Abramovich, had to put the club up for sale. According to ESPN India, the takeover of the club was completed in May 2022 in a deal worth up to £4.25 billion.

While Boehly led the consortium, he had a minority stake in the club. Managed by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, Clearlake owns 61.5 per cent of the London club. On the other hand, the remaining 38.5 percent is divided between Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.

Since the acquisition, Todd Boehly has been acting as the face of Chelsea’s ownership group. The 50-year-old has attended several Blues games at Stamford Bridge. He has also taken a more hands-on role compared to his fellow investors. Although he is likely to be eliminated in 2027, the American businessman may return to the position in 2032 once the next five-year cycle ends.

In his two years as Chelsea Chairman, Todd Boehly has overseen transfer market spending of nearly £1 billion. Despite such a huge expenditure on acquiring new talent, the Blues are currently in 11th place in the Premier League.

The Mauricio Pochhettino-coached side also find themselves out of European competition for the second year in a row, having finished 13th in the 2022/23 season. The club is said to have also suffered losses of more than £90 million during Boehly’s tenure as chairman.

There is still no clarity as to who will be chosen as the new chairman of Chelsea Football Club before 2027. Either Behdad Eghbali or Jose Feliciano could take the role. They could also eventually appoint someone for the job in question.
