The size of the human brain is increasing, a new study has revealed. He added that this gradual increase could reduce the risk of dementia among younger generations. The research, published in the journal JAMA Neurologybased on image analysis of more than 3,000 participants in the United States who were between the ages of 55 and 65. The University of California (UC) Davis Health team concluded that those born in the 1970s (Generation X) had 6.6 percent more overall brain volume than those born in the 1930s.

The study also found that Generation X had 8 percent more white matter volume and 15 percent more gray matter than a member of the previous generation.

The hippocampus, which plays a major role in memory and learning, expanded by 5.7 percent in volume compared to the previous generation.

The change was noticeable even after taking into account other factors such as height, age and gender.

The research was led by Charles DeCarli of the University of California Davis, who said, “The decade one is born appears to affect brain size and possibly long-term brain health.”

“Genetics play a major role in determining brain size, but our findings indicate that external influences – such as health, social, cultural and educational factors – may also play a role,” he told Science Alert.

The researcher said that the increased brain size will lead to a greater reserve against the diseases of ageing, “thereby reducing the overall risk of dementia”.

The disease affects millions of people worldwide, especially due to the increase in the aging population in many countries.

But this study seems to be in line with recent trends which show that the incidence of dementia is decreasing every decade. The risk of disease is also significantly low among younger generations due to their healthier lifestyle and upbringing.
