In February, the volume of milk produced in Ukraine does not increase significantly compared to January and, in general, corresponds to the indicators of February last year. Milk processing enterprises did not experience a shortage of raw materials, and the limited supply of milk was balanced by a certain decrease in the demand for finished products. This was reported by the analyst of the Association of Milk Producers Giorgiy Kukhaleishvili, writes agronews.ua.

According to the National Statistics Service, in February 2024, farms of all categories produced 459.5 thousand tonnes of raw milk, which is 1% more compared to January of the current year and 0.1% more up to February 2023. Volumes February milking corresponds to the indicators of last year and the previous month.

In January-February 2024, the milking volume reached 915.5 thousand tonnes, which is only 0.1% less compared to last year’s period. During the analyzed period, the share of raw milk production enterprises was 51%, and households – 49%.

Enterprises produced 233.9 thousand tonnes of raw milk in February, which is 4% less compared to January, but 7.9% more compared to February last year. In January-February 2024, dairy farms produced 476.9 thousand tonnes of milk, which is 7% more than last year.

In households, the volume of milk produced was 213,000 tonnes of milk, which is 6% more compared to January, but 8% less compared to February 2023. In January-February 2024, smallholder farms produced 438,600 tonnes of raw milk, which is 8% less compared to last year’s period.

Heorhiy Kukhaleishvili notes that the winter months are characterized by a decrease in the volume of milk, but an increase in the amount of milk produced in the spring is expected during the period of “big milk” in Ukraine. In this period, the production of milk-raw material increases in the farms of the population, for which the seasonal nature of “winter-summer” is typical. The limited supply of raw milk in February was balanced by weakening demand in the domestic market for home-produced cheeses due to excessively high prices.

A large supply of imported milk products in the domestic market also contributed to the fact that milk processing enterprises required less milk last month. As a result, the milk supply was more stable than in November-December, when processors felt a shortage of raw materials and raised purchase prices.

In February 2024, an increase in raw milk production was observed on farms of all categories in Mykolaiv region (+8%), Cherkasy region (+4%), Khmelnytskyi region (+3%), Chernihiv region (+7%). , Zaporizhia region (+5%), Poltava region (+2%), Kharkiv region (+7%), Ternopil region (+6%), Donetsk region (+6%), Kyiv region (+2%), Dnipropetrovsk Region (+1%) and Kirovohrad region (+0.3%).

In February 2024, around 55% of raw milk was produced in the following areas:

  • Khmelnytskyi region – 86.2 thousand tons;
  • Vinnytsia region – 79 thousand tons;
  • Cherkasy region – 41.5 thousand tons;
  • Chernihiv region – 58,800 tons;
  • Zhytomyr region – 57.9 thousand tons;
  • Kyiv region – 53,200 tons.
