EU permanent representatives today approved the extension of the so-called autonomous trade measures (visa-free trade) for Ukraine for the next year with one clarification regarding the conditions of application of protective restrictions. This is reported by Ukrinform, writes agronews.ua.

“The ambassadors have just adopted a new compromise text proposed by the Presidency. This compromise remains unchanged compared to the text adopted a week ago during the tripartite talks, with one addition: the specified period (average trade volume between the EU and Ukraine – ed .) for the activation of the protective mechanism is extended to the second. half of 2021. The European Commission will also somewhat strengthen the wording in its own statement,” said the Belgian Presidency of the EU.

As the representative of the Belgian government pointed out, the negotiations held today to find this very delicate balance between the continuation of aid to Ukraine and the protection of the EU’s internal market showed an “excellent spirit of compromise” between EU member states .

According to the announcement, as the agreed text differs from the one adopted jointly with the European Parliament last week, the Belgian EU Presidency will resubmit the agreed text for further adoption by Parliament Europe.

“We understand that we will be able to learn more from the European Parliament after the Easter weekend. At the same time, we are convinced that the compromise reached is a step in the direction provided by the European Parliament’s negotiating mandate. This work must proceed very quickly so that we receive the green light from the European Parliament and ensure a timely extension of autonomous trade measures (with Ukraine) from June 6,” informed the Belgian Presidency of the EU.
