Quebec provincial police said a 51-year-old woman died after a head-on collision in the town of Lachote, about 50 kilometers west of Montreal, early this morning.
Police spokesman Frederic Deschaise says initial information indicates a westbound vehicle on Quebec’s Route 50 entered the oncoming lane of traffic and struck the car the woman was driving.
She was initially brought to the hospital in critical condition but later died.
Deshayes says police arrested the driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old man, for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, although the spokesman says the results of a blood alcohol test are still pending and no formal charges have been filed. .
Deshayes says it is still unclear what led the man’s vehicle to enter the opposite lane.
Police collision reconstructionists are on the scene trying to determine the exact cause of the crash.
