New Delhi: A row has erupted after the image of Hamas terrorists with the almost naked body of a murdered hostage, Shani Louk, won a top prize and sparked a new debate. Shani Louk was taken hostage after the terrorist group’s surprise attack on Israel which later led to massive bloodshed in the Gaza Strip after Israel’s attack in the region.
The sickening image has now won first prize in the ‘Team Photo Story of the Year’ award categories, says a report in the New York Post.
The image shows the body of German-Israeli Shani Louk, in an almost naked state, with Hamas gunmen celebrating and touting guns. The photo was among a collection of 20 images that helped The Associated Press secure first place in the award, which was run by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, the NY Post report added.
Notably, these awards are self-described as the world’s oldest photojournalism competition.
The victory has now received widespread criticism on social media with people expressing shock at the development and many calling it a “disgraceful affront to Jewish life,” the NY Post report said.
“I am disgusted, shocked and outraged that this @AP image of murdered Shani Louk from October 7th has been given photo of the year,” one social media userposted on X. “This is the value of the women of Israel to you?” the user added.
“This is wrong and sick,” said another.
Former Head of Voice Writing at the Israeli mission to the UN, Aviva Klompas asked for punishment for the photographer for clicking the image. “The AP photographer who accompanied jihadi barbarians on their October 7 invasion of Israel has received a prestigious photography award,” he said.
“He is celebrated for taking this picture of a murderer-rape-terrorist with the brutal and tortured body of Shani Louk. It seems to me that he should be going to jail, not getting a reward,” he added.
Louk, 23, was first reported missing from the music festival where Hamas militants took many hostages on October 7. He quickly became one of the faces of the war after the shocking images of her lifeless body on the back of a pickup truck. viral.
Israeli authorities later confirmed that she had been tragically executed by her captors.
