Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have seized cocaine worth Rs 6.68 crore from the Kochi International Airport. A Kenyan national was arrested for smuggling this cocaine.
A DRI official said that based on intelligence, DRI officials arrested Kenyan Karanja Michael Nganga, who arrived in Kochi from Ethiopia via Muscat last week. DRI received information that a Kenyan national was in possession of drugs. However, nothing suspicious was found in the searches conducted on him and his belongings. After that, the DRI was carried out in a hospital X-ray of the body of the accused, in which it was found that there was some suspicious object in the stomach of the accused. The accused swallowed the package of drugs.
The DRI team admitted the accused to another hospital, where the suspicious package was removed from the stomach of the accused. DRI officials said that 50 capsules, in which drugs were hidden, were found in the stomach of the accused. The seized drugs are around 668 grams, the estimated value of which is around 6.68 million rupees. The accused was presented in court, from where an order was issued to send him to remand. Officials say that the Kochi airport is on red alert for smuggling as many cases of drug smuggling have come to light from here.
