A team of professor-researchers interested in ancient Indian history discovered Shaivite cave temples inside two rocks in the Rajapur forest area of ​​Ratnagiri, about 380 km from Mumbai.
Professor Dr Anjay Dhanwade first heard about these ancient monolithic rock caves in 2016 from a villager named Pangare Budruk. He became curious about these caves and began research on the subject. What is special is that Shivalingas still exist inside the caves of Shaiva temples!
Built in the 5th or 6th century
“These rock caves of Shaivite sect are located 8 km from Rajapur town. A similar cluster of Shaiva caves was first discovered in the Kajule region of South Goa. The later monolith-cut cave temple is estimated to have been created around the 5th or 6th century AD and is said to be older than the Elephanta Caves.

Also, the construction of huge cave temples like Elephanta may have started from here. Craftsmen earlier built cave temples in small rocks. The team of researchers estimated that they specialized there and then built the magnificent Elephanta Caves.
