The leader of her party, former First Minister Alex Salmond, said Mr Yousaf had inadvertently made Ms Regan “the most powerful MSP in the Scottish Parliament” as her vote could tip the balance of the outcome.

Speaking on Times Radio, she said she would “use that power very wisely indeed to advance the cause of independence, protect women’s rights and try to find a way to restore competence within the Scottish Government, which has been so rare lately. ”

Ms Regan, who crossed the floor from the SNP to the Alba party, said she would write to the Prime Minister to outline three areas in return for her support.

Douglas Ross, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, said on Thursday at First Minister’s Questions that he would proceed with a motion of no confidence in Mr Yousaf after the Bute House Agreement expires.

Scottish Labor and the Liberal Democrats have said they would support the proposal and insiders say the Scottish Greens are likely to support it too.

Speaking to the LBC earlier today, Ms Regan said she would work with the SNP on an “issue by issue” but that her support in an upcoming confidence vote in Yousaf was conditional.

Mr Salmond said that Mr Yousaf had “succeeded in insulting every opposition party”.

The former leader of the SNP suggested that a more sensible way forward would be for Mr Yousaf to give the decision to the membership of the SNP.

Referring to the former FM’s “wee Patrick Harvie”, the two co-conveners said the Scottish Greens seem more angry with the SNP than the Tory party.

It is understood that one of these is a “firm commitment” to moving his Referendum Bill forward, which would seek to lay the foundation for devolved powers to hold a second vote on independence.

It has so far stalled due to a lack of support from other MSPs.

Earlier this week Ms Regan raised a motion of no confidence in Patrick Harvie, who is understood to have no supporters.

Speaking to LBC he said: “I think it is long, long overdue and I hope this is a sign of a return to a competent government but I am very pleased to see that this will be the end of the extremism of the Green Party.

“I am happy to listen to what the SNP have to say, my door is open and I will support them issue by issue.

“My priorities are completely unchanged and that is: independence, women’s rights, protecting children, protecting our key industries.”
