What is ‘Surya Tilak’?

A system of lenses and mirrors inside the new Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has been arranged using some technology to illuminate the forehead of the Rama Lalla statue at exactly noon on every Ram Navami from this year onwards.

“The basic objective of the Surya Tilak Yojana is to center ‘Tilaka’ on the forehead of Lord Rama idol on every day of Sri Ramanavami. Under this program sunlight is brought on Sri Rama’s forehead in the afternoon on Sri Ram Navami.

It has been decided to celebrate this tradition every year,” said Dr SK Panigrahi, a scientist at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee who is involved in the Suryatilaka project.

The position of the Sun changes every year and according to some calculations, the date of Rama Navami repeats every 19 years.

The projected size of the tilak appearing on the forehead of the idol is 58 mm. The tilak is visible on Rama Lalla’s forehead for about three to three and a half minutes, remaining in full brightness for two minutes.

Science behind ‘Surya Tilak’

The rays of the sun entering the Ram Mandir first fall on the mirror placed on the top floor of the temple. The rays then fall on another mirror on the second floor of the temple using three strategically placed lenses.
Later on the occasion of Ramanavami, for ‘Surya Abhishek’, the sunlight appearing on the forehead of Rama Lalla idol will enter the ‘Garbhagriha’ and the rays of the sun will shine on Rama’s forehead.
